Colorado: Oppose HB 1237 to weaken the DUI law

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) needs your voice to save lives on our roads in Colorado and to oppose HB 1237 which would allow for extended drinking hours to 3am.

Why MADD opposes HB 1237? Deaths on our roads have surged. Beginning in 2020, our state saw a historic surge in lives taken by impaired drivers on our Colorado roads with the highest annual totals since 2001. In 2023, 227 lives were taken by impaired drivers on Colorado roads (CDOT Fatal Crash Data).

While HB 1237 claims to create a soft closing for bars, the reality is that it extends drinking hours until 3AM. With more deaths and injuries on our roads and fewer law enforcement officers to keep us safe, this bill is a risk that Colorado can't afford to take.

Passage of HB 1237 could have far-reaching public safety implications for Colorado. HB 1237 would make it possible for establishments in different cities to have different closing times--a change in state law which will likely result in an increase in drunk driving.
