Help Stop Drunk Driving in Pennsylvania

Mothers Against Drunk Driving needs your help to advance HB 1290 to make Pennsylvania the 36th state to require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers.

In Pennsylvania, ignition interlocks are required for all repeat and first-time offenders with a blood alcohol concentration of .10 or greater for a period of at least one year. According to a 2018 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, laws like the measure by Representatives Pisciottano and Marshall reduces drunk driving deaths by 16%. 35 states plus Washington, DC require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers.

As your constituent, I urge you to support HB 1290 by Representatives Pisciottano and Marshall to improve the drunk driving law. The proposal requires the use of ignition interlocks for all first-time convicted drunk drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2021, there were 337 people killed in drunk driving crashes—a 13% increase from 2019. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the ignition interlock provisions in HB 1290 is proven to reduce drunk driving deaths by 16%.

An ignition interlock is a device about the size of a smart phone that is wired into the ignition system of a vehicle. If an interlock user is drunk, the vehicle will not start. Interlocks cost around $3 a day to lease. Over the past 16 years, ignition interlocks have prevented over 109,000 attempts to drink drunk in Pennsylvania, including over 8,000 in 2022. Can you imagine how many more attempts to drive drunk will be stopped by enacting HB 1290?
