Help Stop Drunk Driving in New Jersey

Mothers Against Drunk Driving needs your help to advance lifesaving legislation Senate Bill 3011 and Assembly Bill 4800, which will help reduce drunk driving deaths by extending New Jersey’s 2019 law requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted drivers.

S 3011 and A 4800 saves lives. According to a 2018 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, laws like S 3011 and A 4800 reduce drunk driving deaths by 16%. New Jersey is one of 34 states plus Washington, DC to require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers.

An ignition interlock is a device about the size of a smart phone that is wired into the ignition system of a vehicle. If an interlock user is drunk, the vehicle will not start. Interlocks cost around $3 a day to lease. S 3011 and A 4800 are lifesaving. Here are the key provisions:

  • Incentivizes the use of ignition interlocks: Allows a person to install an interlock anytime post-arrest and allows the person to receive credit towards any time ordered on the device upon conviction.
  • Gives courts discretion and leeway to order a longer duration on ignition interlock.
  • Extends the current law requiring the use of interlocks for first-time offenders to more accurately measure the effectiveness of ignition interlocks.
