Ensure the USDOT Meets the Congressional Deadline for an Impaired Driving Prevention Tech Safety Standard

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) needs your help to ensure the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) meets the Congressional deadline for a final impaired driving prevention technology standard to save lives and prevent injuries.

TRAGEDY: Someone dies in a drunk driving crash every 45 minutes in the U.S., and someone is injured every 2 minutes.

WHY: That is the deadline Congress set when it passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November 2021. The law gave USDOT three years to complete its rulemaking process.

As a constituent, I urge you to ensure the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) meets the Congressional deadline for a final impaired driving prevention technology standard.

The bipartisan HALT (Honoring Abbas Family Legacy to Terminate) Drunk Driving Act that was signed into law in November 2021 as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act requires the USDOT to issue a rulemaking to make impaired driving prevention technology standard in all new cars.

The HALT Act was led in the Senate by Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Rick Scott (R-FL), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Gary Peters (D-MI), and in the House by Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-MI), David McKinley (R-WV) and Kathleen Rice (D-NY).

Drunk driving remains the leading cause of death on U.S. roadways, killing more than 12,000 people in 2021, injuring 300,000 more and representing almost one-third of all traffic deaths. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, passive impaired driving technology could save 9,400 lives each year and prevent countless injuries.

Please remind USDOT that thousands of Americans are being killed and injured while we wait for the final impaired driving prevention technology standard.

Please demand forward progress to meet the November 15, 2024 deadline. There is no time to lose.
