Improve the drunk driving ignition interlock law

MADD recently graded each state ignition interlock law and made recommendations on actions lawmakers can take to strengthen their laws. The average state grade is F, so most states have a long way to go to maximize the use of these devices for convicted drunk drivers.

Even with a limited number of state laws, since 2006 interlocks stopped 3.78 million attempts to drive drunk with a breath alcohol concentration of .08 or greater, including 390,456 attempts to drive drunk in 2020. Can you imagine how many more attempts to drive drunk would be prevented and lives saved if lawmakers enact even more effective interlock laws?

As a constituent, I wanted to share information from a new report by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), which grades each state’s ignition interlock law and shows the number of times interlocks have stopped drunk driving attempts in our state. An interlock is a post-drunk driving arrest adjudication tool that is about the size of a smartphone that requires a driver to blow into a mouthpiece to test their breath alcohol concentration (BAC) before they can start a vehicle. If the device detects an alcohol level greater than allowed by the monitoring authority, it prevents the engine from being started.

According to MADD, the average state interlock law grade is an F. However, from 2006 to 2020, interlocks stopped 3.78 million attempts to drive drunk with a BAC of .08 or greater, including 390,456 attempts to drive drunk in 2020. Can you imagine how many more drunk driving attempts would be prevented and lives saved if we had a more effective ignition interlock law?
